Starlink Gets Go-Ahead for Satellite Internet in India, But There’s a Twist
SpaceX’s Starlink has finally received the regulatory nod it’s been waiting for in India. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has granted final approval for Starlink to begin commercial broadband services, paving the way for the company to join other satellite internet providers like Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio-SES in the growing Indian market.
Trials and Security Hurdles Remain Before Full Launch
While the final approval is a significant step forward, it doesn’t mean Starlink satellites will be beaming internet across India immediately. Although the company secured its Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) permit last month, several key steps remain before a full-scale launch can take place. Starlink still needs to procure trial spectrum and demonstrate compliance with Indian security regulations.
What This Means for Internet Access in India
Starlink’s entry into the Indian market has the potential to revolutionize internet access, particularly in underserved rural areas. With its network of low-earth orbit satellites, Starlink can provide high-speed broadband to regions where traditional infrastructure is lacking. However, the “expiry date” alluded to in previous reports suggests that the regulatory approval might be contingent upon meeting specific milestones within a certain timeframe.
