Skill Gap Alert: Only 47% of Indian Schools Offer Skill-Based Courses

A recent PARAKH survey has brought to light a concerning gap in India’s education system. The study reveals that less than half (47%) of Indian schools offer skill-based courses for students in Classes IX and above. This alarming statistic raises questions about the country’s preparedness for the future job market and the effectiveness of current vocational education initiatives.

Student Participation Even Lower: Impact on Skill India Mission

Even more concerning is the low student participation rate in these limited skill-based courses. Only 29% of students in eligible classes are currently enrolled, further widening the skills gap. This low uptake hinders the progress of the Skill India Mission, a government initiative aimed at empowering the youth with employable skills.

Bridging the Gap: A Call for Action

The PARAKH survey findings underscore the urgent need for increased investment and focus on skill-based education in Indian schools. Addressing this gap is crucial not only for individual student success but also for the nation’s economic growth and development. It calls for a collaborative effort between government, educational institutions, and industry to create a more robust and accessible vocational training ecosystem.
