When an athlete stands on the podium, medal in hand and the tricolor rising high, the world often forgets the guiding force behind that victory. In India, one such force is Dr. C. Ajithkumar — an International Athletic Coach, Director of Sports, and Associate Professor — a man who has devoted his life to a single mission:

“To create Olympic medalists for our nation.”

A Journey Rooted in Determination

Born in Amarapuram, Kottayam, Kerala, to late P. K. Chellappan Sir and Janamma Teacher, Ajithkumar’s story began in simplicity, far away from global arenas. His first lessons in athletics came from Merikutty Teacher, who instilled discipline and passion. Later, P. V. Velsi Sir refined his competitive spirit during his university days, laying the foundation for his athletic journey.

His home village Amara and the National Arts and Sports Club stood firmly behind him, encouraging every stride. In 1991, his excellence was recognized with the Best Athlete Award from the Government of Kerala — a milestone that set him on the path toward a greater calling: coaching.

Guided by Visionaries

Behind Ajithkumar’s transformation from athlete to coach were mentors who shaped his philosophy:

  • Dr. Mohan Alva, Hon. Chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, gave him the platform to mold future champions.

  • Sri P. T. Ouseph Sir, the mentor of legendary athlete P. T. Usha, strengthened his technical and tactical expertise in athletics.

This powerful blend of guidance and opportunity turned him into a coach whose influence has spread across India and beyond.

Leadership Across Roles

Today, Dr. Ajithkumar stands as both mentor and leader, with responsibilities that blend academics and athletics:

  • Director of Sports, SBSU

  • Associate Professor, Indira Gandhi Technological and Medical Sciences University, Arunachal Pradesh

  • Athletic Coach, Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri

  • Chief Project Director, HRDS INDIA Sports Academy

Through these roles, he unites science, psychology, and biomechanics to create a holistic model of athlete development.

Landmark Achievements

Dr. Ajithkumar’s coaching milestones have rewritten history for Indian athletics:

  • In 2023, he became the first Indian coach to produce a World University Games medalist in long jump when Bhavani Yadav Bhagavathi leapt 6.42m in Chengdu, China, to win bronze.

  • Honored with the Best Coach Award by Kerala State Athletics Association (2017).

  • Recognized again with the Best Coach Award by Alva’s Education Foundation (2023).

  • Celebrated for pioneering the use of scientific, biomechanical, and psychological training methods in India.

Athletes Who Carry His Legacy

The true testament to his work lies in the athletes who bring glory to India:

  • Bhavani Yadav Bhagavathi – World University Games bronze medalist (long jump).

  • Nayana James – Asian gold medalist in long jump, Asia’s No. 1 (PB: 6.55m).

  • Sneha – Asian silver medalist in 100m (PB: 11.41s).

  • Renga K – World Police Games record holder, 100m (11.42s).

  • Jijin Vijayan – National record holder in 100m (PB: 10.50s).

  • Stalin Jose – Decathlete, 9th place, World University Games.

  • Ali Ansari – Asian Youth silver medalist, now a coach.

  • Rajesh Postel – Asian Junior silver medalist.

Each of them is a reflection of Ajithkumar’s belief that discipline, resilience, and science transform potential into performance.

The Coaching Philosophy

For Dr. Ajithkumar, success is a carefully constructed process built on four pillars:

  • Identifying grassroots talent and nurturing it step by step.

  • Using biomechanics, strength, and speed training for peak output.

  • Developing psychological toughness for high-pressure global competitions.

  • Prioritizing long-term athlete growth over short-lived results.

As he often emphasizes, “Talent alone does not create champions — discipline and science do.”

Beyond the Track

Away from the field, Ajithkumar finds his greatest strength in his family. His wife, Reena K. K., serves as a Section Officer in the Kerala Government Secretariat. Their daughters, Aleena Ajith and Ananya Ajith, are his constant source of inspiration.

Living in Thiruvananthapuram, he balances his demanding professional commitments with family values — proving that true success is built on both personal and professional foundations.

Toward the Olympic Dream

From the small village of Amarapuram to shaping athletes who compete globally, Dr. C. Ajithkumar’s journey is proof that India’s Olympic dream is real, alive, and within reach.

His message to every athlete and every supporter of Indian athletics is clear:

“India has the talent. With the right guidance, we will conquer the world of athletics.”

Dr. Ajithkumar is not just a coach — he is the visionary building India’s future champions, one athlete at a time.
