Bihar Voter ID Update: Aadhaar Accepted in Patna, Rural Areas Face Hurdles

Bihar’s efforts to update its voter rolls have revealed a significant urban-rural divide, impacting a large portion of the state’s voters. While 57% of voters have successfully submitted their forms, the process has been far from smooth.

Aadhaar Accepted in Patna, But Not in Rural Bihar

In the state capital, Patna, the process has been relatively straightforward, with Aadhaar cards being readily accepted as proof of identity. However, the situation is drastically different in rural areas, where officials are demanding birth certificates, caste certificates, or land ownership documents, creating significant hurdles for many residents.

Rural Residents Struggle to Meet Document Requirements

This discrepancy is causing considerable distress, particularly in the Seemanchal region. Many rural residents lack the required paperwork, leading to a surge in applications for these documents. There are growing concerns about potential voter disenfranchisement, especially among the elderly and those displaced by recent floods who may have lost their essential documents. This situation raises questions about equitable access to the voter registration process and the potential impact on voter list retention.
